Volunteers make it happen

Putting on the Tall Ships Celebration is a huge undertaking. The most amazing thing about it is that it's largely a volunteer effort. There's no big company or professional promoter putting on the show. At last report there were over 700 people, Bay City Citizens, who gave up their time to work and sweat and smile and stay on their feet day after day.

Organizing the event two years ago was an amazing undertaking because it had not been done before. This time the committee had some experience. But that didn't make it easier because the celebration had to live up to the great success from the first time around when Bay City was named "Port of the Year". Complicating the entire process are the new requirements of Homeland Security.

Planning for the 2003 Tall Ship Celebration has been in the works almost since the 2001 event ended. From all accounts it's come together better than could be hoped for. The work of the committee, organizers and all volunteers should be commended.
