Evening with the Bijou Orchestra

Bay City is well known for its love and support of the arts. The newest addition to the area is The Bijou Orchestra. This unique ensemble of top professional musicians, led by artistic directory Leo Najar, will be headquartered at the historic State Theater but will perform throughout the area.

The free concert honoring the Tall Ships Celebration was marked the first performance of the Orchestra. The mission of the Bijou is to perform "everything" from Sousa, Strauss and Joplin through Ellington and Sondheim. Friday night's concert lived up that mission with a wide variety of offerings which delighted the entire audience.

Featured artists included Daniel Gale, well known local vocal artist and Cantor at Temple Israel, and soporano Shayla Powell. Also featured was accordion virtuoso Julien Labro (who's fingers move too fast to be comprehended!) The final vocal selection was offered by Bay City's 10 year old Kelsey Woods.

The Bijou will soon begin it's formal concert season with a performance on August 11, 2003. For more information contact the Bay Arts Council, next to the historic State Theater in downtown Bay City. (phone 893-0343).
