Delta College Public Television Station, Q-TV, will broadcast a community forum with local leaders to discuss economic trends of the Great Lakes Bay Region.
Theme is how the region can provide for its citizens and effectively compete in the global marketplace in the years to come.
"Hard Times. Hard Choices. How Will Mid-Michigan Recover?" airs Monday, January 18th starting at 9 pm. The program looks at the Michigan and Mid-Michigan region's economy with expert panelists and community members. This broadcast town meeting is a partnership between MacNeil/Lehrer Productions and Delta College WDCQ-TV.
Here is the January 18th program breakdown:
8-9 pm "By The People: Michigan Hard Times, Hard Choices." Kwame Holman, correspondent for "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer", moderates this documentary that looks at the crucial issues related to Michigan's economy, education and housing as we approach the 2010 general election.
9-10:30 pm "Hard Times. Hard Choices. How Will Mid-Michigan Recover?" Andy Rapp, a 40-year broadcast journalist and host of Q-TV's "Currently Speaking", moderates discussion with regional community leaders live from Delta College.
"This is the most comprehensive discussion of Michigan's future attempted by public television, and the timing could not be more crucial as we enter the second decade of this new century," says Rapp, Executive Producer, who comments:
"The U.S. economic situation has suffered terribly in recent years, and our community has been at the center of this crisis. We hope that viewers will take advantage of this special night and join us and our outstanding panel of Mid-Michigan leaders."
Participants include: Mary Lou Benecke, Executive Director of Public Affairs for Dow Corning Corporation; Mary Jo Finney, Director, Thompson Center for Learning and Teaching, Dean of School of Education and Human Services, University of Michigan-Flint; Jimmy E. Greene, CEO for Total Solutions Group in Saginaw; Ed Oberski, CEO for Great Lakes Bay Michigan Works!; Don Petro, Regional Servicing Representative, UAW Region 1D; Steven Rosin, Asst. Professor and Technical Division Chair at Delta College; Bob Van Deventer, President and CEO, Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce; and Scott Walker, CEO of Midland Tomorrow.
The By The People initiative was launched in 2002 by MacNeil/Lehrer Productions and strives to gather diverse groups of citizens who do not usually talk about civic and policy issues. It is nonpartisan and supports no particular policy or viewpoint. The purpose is solely to encourage informed dialog.
"With the start of a new decade, this is a great moment to examine what the region has to be doing to continue its success and build on all that we have achieved," says Barry Baker, General Manager.
WDCQ-TV, known as Q-TV, is the first public television station in central Michigan and has broadcast continuously since 1964. The station's mission encourages learning and can reach approximately 1.2 million people in the Great Lakes Bay Region and beyond. Q-TV is committed to community programming and currently produces five local series, in addition to performance and documentary programs. The station was named last spring as the Michigan Public Broadcasting TV Station of the Year by the Michigan Association of Broadcasters.
On cable, Q-TV can be seen on Charter Channel 9, and Comcast Digital Channel 19.
