Both teams were desperate for a win to keep any playoff hopes alive and for personal pride. The Icehawks struck first in the opening period. They built a two goal lead in the second period but when the Inferno narrowed the margin to one with a goal to start the third period, the Icehawks held on for a much needed 4-2 win.
The first period opened with a fight eight seconds into the game. Fearful the two teams could unleash a season full of frustrations, the officials seemed determined to keep the game under control. Any check appeared rewarded with a trip to the penalty box. The players' quickly adjusted to the tight calling making for a fast paced up and down game. This allowed the players to display their skating skills and passing. Justin Lacy was the benefactor of the style of play as he moved in to the top of the faceoff circle and blistered a shot by the Inferno netminder giving the Icehawks a 1-0 first period lead.

The Inferno started the second period applying plenty of pressure on goalie Bryan Standoff and scoring a minute and a half into the period. The Ice Hawks responded two minutes later as Jeffry Wood fired a shot that Inferno goalie Jori Abel blocked toward the corner. But Lacy was in perfect position to received the rebound and put it back in the top shelf to regain the IceHawk lead.
Later in the period, Bryan Standoff preserved the lead when under heavy fire; he took a shot from his left sent it toward his far right corner. A charging Inferno player picked up the puck and shot at what appeared to be a wide open net. Standoff launched himself and made a diving save to preserve the lead and inspire his teammates. Soon the Ice Hawks were on a powerplay. With a strong attack at the net, Jeffry Wood picked up a loose puck and buried it for a 3-1 IceHawk lead heading into the third period.

The Inferno went right on the attack to start the third period. Seemingly catching the Ice Hawks by surprise, the Inferno got in deep and scored twenty one seconds into the period when Cory Keske fired a close range shot that was initially by Standoff. However, the shot hit his shoulder bouncing over it and into the net.
The Ice Hawks kept their composure and withstood more pressure when the Inferno tried to take advantage of a powerplay early into the period. Having killed off the powerplay, Tri City controlled the puck better keeping pressure in the Inferno zone then took advantage of their lone powerplay of the period when Jeffry Wood dove to shove in a loose puck in front of the net giving the Ice Hawks a two goal advantage. The goal gave the Ice Hawks a huge advantage as it allowed them to challenge the puck more helping keep the Inferno from mounting a solid attack. Then with just over a minute to play, Tri City kept the puck in the Inferno zone those preventing a late game offensive fire by the Inferno from occurring.
The Ice Hawks return to the Bay County Civic Arena next Saturday as they take on the Mountain Cats in a must win game. Bring out your friends for some great hockey action.
