Girl Scout Program Updated for Rotarians

Jan Barker, CEO of the Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan spoke to Rotary on the occasion of the Girl Scouts upcoming 100 year anniversary.

Girl Scouts in Michigan serve some 25,000 girls and have 6,500 adults working as volunteers leaders and helpers. GSA is open to girls from five to seventeen years old as well as adults, both women and men.

Jan talked about the changing face of Girl Scouts and their goal of "building courage, confidence and character to make the world a better place". GSA has grown to offer many programs besides the traditional "troop" setting. The organization offers classes, trips, education, camps and troops.

One of the interesting points was that the famous Girl Scout Cookie sales are more of a training exercise than a fund raiser. Girls learn to plan, manage, sell their cookies. More than one successful woman has told Jan that she learned her first skills with those cookie sales. "Cookie cash" does play a part in funding a girl's camp experience. The funds apply to all camps and apply double to several offerings.

Among the programs of the Girl Scouts are "BrainSTEM" inspiring girls to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). "Living On My Honor" teaches the similarities and differences among people and helps to counter bigotry. "OK2BU" fights middle and high school truancy problems. "uniquely ME!" addresses risky behavior girls may encounter.

Girl Scouts offer a number of camping experiences from Day Camps to Resident Camps and Troop Resident Camps. Locations include Linden and Kalamazoo. The "Bat Girls" and "Bat Women" programs take girls on trips like Indiana's Marengo Caves and Kentucky's cave country for spelunking expeditions.

GSA will host an all day "Juliette Low Birthday Party" on October 20 at Midland's Heritage Park. The party honors Girl Scout founder Juliette Low, and will feature great programs and activities.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Thesaurus Project deliveries are running behind schedule and teachers are anxious to get the books. The end of the school year is just a few weeks off and these books must be delivered. If you've signed up be sure to get your books and deliver them. Talk to Rich Milster , Chuck Cusick or Ed Keating if you have questions.

The District Conference was held last week and several Rotarians reported on the activities. Keynote speaker Jim Abbot, major league pitcher, impressed everyone with his talk.

The Club Board met before the regular meeting. The treasurer's report shows that the club will end the year with funds in the bank. Another new member was approved.

The Rotary Garden across the River needs work and Doug Rise will lead a group to accomplish that. He needs a group of volunteers to help for a few hours.

Brenda Scramlin is heading the Camp Rotary committee. The club hopes to sponsor about a dozen students this year. If you have candidates, please see Brenda.

The club continues to recruit new members. The committee will meet next Tuesday at 11:00 am before the regular meeting.

A chair is needed for the Grants Committee. Grants were not made this year as the club finished up its major projects program. The committee needs to be reactivated now to begin planning for future grants and projects.

The International Night committee continues to meet and plan this year's event. Be sure to let Lee Newton or Kim Prime know how you can help with this year's event!
