Doug Rise
After a career with the Bay City Housing Commission,
Rotarian
Doug Rise continued with his longtime volunteer work with
Community Home Solutions.
Today he's the head of that organization.
CHS was formed as a not-for-profit organization in 1993. Their mission statement says
"CHS is committed to facilitating the building of safe and thriving neighborhoods where people want to live, work and play, and to broadening our partnerships resulting in increased economic & community development opportunities."
As CHS starts their first ever Capital Campaign, Doug is presenting to groups like Rotary to tell the story of what CHS is and what it does.
As defined in the mission, CHS is helping people, who meet its financial qualifications, realize their dreams of homeownership. CHS helps those in need with first time home purchasing, emergency repairs, and foreclosure prevention services to keep those people in their houses.
Since 2012 alone, CHS has met with 788 families for foreclosure prevention services. 687 of those were able to stay in their homes for an 85% success rate. 601 people went through homebuyer education classes and 387 received pre-purchase counseling.
Over this same period, CHS has paid $5.4 million to local contractors for rehab services and emergency repairs. CHS has renovated and sold 17 homes and helped with another 235 homes.
Doug went on to show several success stories with before and after pictures of homes that have been rehabilitated.
With a vision, and goals, for the next 25 years, CHS wants to create and expand vibrant neighborhoods throughout the city. Using the city's recent home study the targets are clear and the work well defined.
CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS
The club's meeting on September 25 returns to the DOUBLETREE as usual.
Reminder: After several years of service as Chair of the Club Foundation,
Ed Keating will soon step down. Anyone interested in taking this position is asked to contact Harvey.
In the "Rotary Foundation Minute"
Eric Jylha talked about the history of Polio. Many Rotarians are old enough to remember those days when parents feared the summer months and the outbreaks. Eric related news from Maine in 1954 when 14 new cases were diagnosed in one week. He talked about a Tawas Beach Club newsletter saying how members would escape the city in summer to be far from the big cities and the polio danger. After years of work and $1.8 billion in donations, the Rotary Polio eradication efforts have reduced the worldwide number of cases to just a handful. The hope remains that kids born today will not know what Polio is when they are adults.
