Aaron Faist
Aaron Faist, Program Officer for the Bay Area Community Foundation's
College Resource Center spoke to Rotary about the realities and costs of a modern college education and about the resources provided by the Community Foundation.
Faist said there are three questions every student should answer. First, what are they going to do with their lives, Too many kids just don't think it through?
Second, a student must learn what training they need. Only 30% of careers require a four-year degree. Another 60% requires job-specific training, an apprenticeship, and perhaps a certificate.
The third question is how are they going to pay for their training.
College today is nothing like it was when many of the club members were college students. Along with huge campuses, great recreation and athletic facilities, and superior instruction, there is also the cost.
Parents may recognize what the cost means, but for most high school students, the figures they see when selecting a school are just numbers on a page. In fact, there are numerous resources available to cover these costs, but for the majority of students these resources represent loans that must be paid back. That's why the average student graduate with a student loan debt around $30,000; a debt they must repay.
The Community Foundation manages and distributed over 100 different scholarships locally. They
started their College Resource Center a number of years ago to specifically address the needs of students. Besides the two staff members at the Resource Center, every high school has people who help students.
The College Resource Center offers both personal advice and counseling as well as tangible resources. Each year the Center gives out about 300 "big red boxes". The "milk crate" contains material for immediate use, but is meant to be the storage place for all college-related papers for the entire time the student is in school.
Of the 100 scholarships offered, each student may select 15 to apply for. That is a manageable number and encourages the students to be sure they are eligible for the ones they submit. Statistics show that 53% of those who apply get something.
The application period opens December 1 and runs through February. Faist said every student needs to start preparing now. Waiting until the last week just won't allow the student to get the job done.
