Bay City Players presents Messiah on the Frigidaire by John Culbertson
Bay City Players will present the production; Messiah on the Frigidaire, by John Culbertson, January 15-17 and 21-24, 2010 at the Bay City Players, 1214 Columbus Avenue, in Bay City. Performance times are 8:00 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. Messiah on the Frigidaire is directed by Joanne Berry.
Messiah on the Frigidaire is a play you may not have heard of, but it is a play you are not likely to forget once you see it. In a day and age when someone can sell a grilled cheese sandwich on E-Bay because they see the face of the Madonna in the bread, we need both a sense of humor and a little extra thoughtfulness in order to deal with our fast-paced lives.
Messiah is set in a trailer park in South Carolina. The fridge is on the porch because it is too big to fit through the trailer door. Everything's just fine until someone notices the shadows from a nearby tree seem to be projecting the image of Jesus on the refrigerator door.
This sets into motion a frenzy of conflict, communion and good old fashioned commerce. When the National Investigator turns this into headlines, the trailer park overflows with miracle seekers, curious doubters, and some people with a definite political agenda. As the world comes to their trailer door, the lives of the people involved turn into an hilarious combination of excitement and confusion.
How all this affects the simple owners of the fridge and their friends is both funny and touching. Their relationships with each other take a 'miraculous' turn. Popular in community theatres throughout the country.
