Bay Area Chamber

Call to Action!

February 18, 2009
By: Mike Seward

Call to Action!

As you may be aware, Governor Granholm in her 2009 State of the State address announced a significant delay and increased regulatory burden in the permitting process for new coal-fueled power plants, including Consumers Energy's proposed clean coal unit at Karn/Weadock. The Governor's decision is of serious concern to your Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Consumers Energy had been seeking approval from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) to construct an 800-megawatt coal-fueled power plant in Hampton Township. This proposed plant would mean an investment by Consumers Energy of at least $2.4 billion, the largest private investment in the history of Bay County. This vital project would bring an estimated 1,800 construction jobs, about 80 new permanent operating jobs and would more than double Consumers Energy's property tax payments to local governmental units from the current level of $11 million annually to well over $20 million. In order to help ensure this project becomes a reality, we need your help.

We are asking you to let the Governor know of your opposition to her moratorium on new clean coal plants in Michigan and on the Karn/Weadock project in particular. If you agree, please consider sending an e-mail to the Governor via her web site at www.michigan.gov Look for "Contact the Governor" on her web page and click on that.

Or, you can send a letter to:

Governor Jennifer Granholm

P O Box 30013

Lansing, MI 48909

Fax: 517-335-6863

Your Chamber hopes you will express your support for the new power plant and opposition to the Governor?s directive delaying the permitting process. Please help us by writing to the Governor today.
