Don Clark rehearses orchestra
Bay City will welcome the Tall Ship Celebration 2010 fleet into port on Thursday afternoon. At 7:00 that evening the Bay Arts Council will host the crews and the public to a free concert production of Gilbert and Sullivan's Pirates of Penzance in the Wenona Park Shell.

"The idea for doing Pirates came up about a year ago" said Musical Director Don Clark. "Several of us were remembering when we did Pirates in 2004 for the Bay City Players Stages of Discovery program. We thought it would be fun to do it again and it just seemed appropriate to stage it during the Tall Ship Celebration"

The original idea was to get a group of singers and just do a musical review on the stage. Singers would sit on stools with the music on stands and perform the songs. It would be easy.

That simple idea soon grew to include a chorus. Clark sent letters and e-mails to local churches and to school music departments asking if anyone would like to sing. The response was immediate and encouraging.

As word spread, the Midland Choral Society contacted the group and asked if they could sing. Soon the Saginaw Choral group got involved. Pam Barnes and Amy Hughes got involved and began to block some movements and staging. A live orchestra seemed a good addition and Clark took on that task.

Marking Music
The group began practicing weekly in May. As word spread through social networks on the Internet the number of performers grew. At last count the production will now include at least 70 singers and a 30 piece orchestra. Some of the area's best musicians, vocalists, and performers are involved.

"We decided to have t-shirts made for each of the three choral groups, pirates, police and the daughters of the Major General" said Clark. "That, with the action, will make a real production out of it."

The show is sponsored by the Bay Arts Council, which is doing it as a "gift to the community", said Clark. Other sponsors include Hagen Ford, Team One Credit Union, Kuhn Young Design Group, and the law firm of Lambert, Leser, Isackson, Cook & Giunta.

The production is free to the public and starts at 7:00 in Wenonah Park. "We think there could be an audience of a thousand people" said Clark. "It's going to be a great production!"

(Although the weather forecast sound just fine, the "rain site", if needed will Central High School's auditorium.)
