BAY CITY, MI - January 16, 2019 - The Bay Area Community Foundation is now accepting letter of intent forms for grants from the newly-established Healthy Living Fund. The Healthy Living Fund is made possible by a $1 million award from The Dow Corning Foundation in 2018 to provide recreation and healthy experiences for residents and visitors of all ages in Bay and Arenac counties. One million dollars was also awarded each to Saginaw Community Foundation and Midland Area Community Foundation for the same purpose in their communities.
"Our region has benefited greatly from the innovation and generosity of the Dow Corning Foundation over the years," said Diane Fong, President, and CEO of Bay Area Community Foundation. "We are honored to help extend their legacy into the community through the Healthy Living Fund and look forward to what is to come."
Acceptable projects for this grant funding include those that construct, maintain, or repair community assets that promote a healthy lifestyle. The goal is to provide places where people of all ages can come together and enjoy a sense of community. The Healthy Living Fund is not intended to support organized sports teams or sponsor their activities. Funding collaboration is required, and priority will be given to projects that have a plan for ongoing maintenance.
To apply, organizations must be a 501(c)(3), government entity, or school in Bay or Arenac counties. The first step is to call Program Officer Joni King at 989-893-4438 to see if the project is a good fit. Eligible applicants will receive a letter of intent form that is to be filled out and due by 5 p.m. on Monday, February 7, 2019. Applicants will be selected by the second week in February to continue in the process by completing the full, online grant application by March 11, 2019. Notifications of awards will be made in May 2019.
In 2018, two projects were awarded $50,000 each: Riverview Discovery Island playscape in Bay City and Bay City State Park's playground rebuild. Groundbreaking for both projects will begin this year.
The remainder of the Healthy Living Fund will continue to be granted out each spring for the next five years or until funds are exhausted.
