Rotary Hears About SVSU Athletics
John Decker
Rotary met at the Pere Marquette Depot on June 4.
John Decker, Director of Athletics at
SVSU spoke to the club about the school's programs, facilities and athletes. Several significant people personify the SVSU Program. He named National Heptathlon Champion Jauren Huebner, and former Dallas Cowboys starter Jeff Heath, and former player Matt LaFleur who is now coaching the Green Bay Packers.
Decker went on to talk about the variety of programs, for both men and women, that excel at the school. He pointed out, however, that athletes are students first. He talked of the program's reputation for the quality of the young people who play there.
Outlining how athletic scholarships work in college sports, at all levels, he noted that you'll see SVSU athletes working all around the area. Some are part time others are full time. He said SVSU is unusual in that all of their student athletes must earn or provide their own funding.
SVSU is a member of The
Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
Since it's founding in 1972, GLIAC has been a leader in advancing and promoting intercollegiate athletics for men and women. Today there are eight members from Michigan plus others from Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin.
Decker proudly talked about the school's Fieldhouse. Opened in 2014, this state of the art facility was the main part of the Ryder Center Expansion.
This is one of just two such facilities in NCAA Division II schools. It stands out as a premiere facility which includes:
- 85 yard football field with field turf surface
- 300 meter indoor track
- Bleachers with seating capacity for 1,000 spectators
- Daktronics Fully Digital Results Board
- Four full batting cages for baseball & softball training
- Timing boolih for all indoor track meets
The utility of the Fieldhouse was attested to when the school recently hosted Michigan's
First Robotics competition on the facility's floor.
Decker also talked about
Title 9, the 1972 Federal law aimed at insuring gender equity in all school sports. (He noted that Title 9 is administered by the Department of Education, not the NCAA).
The statute bases gender equity on the overall balance of a long list of items.
