David Neal
David Neal, head of Internet security for Bierlein-Trombley Technologies, spoke to Rotary about the darker side of the internet and how "bad guys" find a way into your computer. In an era of spammers and hackers, the talk defined some terms users often hear and talked about some of the ways a computer can be compromised.

To set the stage, Neal defined the often heard terms WAN (wide area network) as the world outside your office, and LAN (Local area network) as the world inside your office. The demarcation between the two is often a device like a router or a firewall. He went on to define MALWARE (malicious software) as the active ingredient that causes users so much grief.

To illustrate how pervasive attacks can be, Neal said that he recently turned his internal firewall off for a short period of time and recorded all of the outside attempts to access his machines. He showed page after page of attempts to get in before he re-established that front door defense.

There are many types of MALWARE "out there". Some like "ADWARE" are fairly harmless although terribly annoying. "BOTS" is a small program you might actually want to automate tasks you frequently do. On the other hand, "BOTS" is also a tool used by hackers to make your machine a tool to do things you definitely do NOT want.

"ROOTKITS" can embed themselves in the soul of your machine and basically take over. "RANSOMWARE" is a relatively new threat that locks up your machine and asks you to pay a ransom. (Don't do it... call someone for help! Most importantly, keep regular backups of all important files and data.) "SPYWARE" hides on your machine and reports your activity and keystrokes to someone outside.

In many cases, you won't know that you have been infected. Neal listed a number of symptoms you should be aware of. These include increased CPU usage, slowing performance, problems connecting to networks, freezing or crashing, programs running or turning off or reconfiguring themselves. In general, be aware of strange behavior.

There are a number of good practices that help keep your computer safe. Keep your software and operating system up to date. Allow those automatic updates to run. Log out at the end of the day. Use good passwords, use a good antivirus, etc. Most importantly, just don't visit sketchy sites on the internet. And NEVER CLICK offers that look too good, or that look suspicious.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

The February 12 Board Meeting
will be held a week later

February 19, 2019 before the regular meeting.

The Chamber of Commerce will be holding it's State of the Community program at the Doubletree on February 12, the same time as the Rotary Meeting. Since many members want to attend that meeting, the Board decided to cancel the regular Tuesday Rotary meeting and postpone the monthly Board meeting. Anyone who attends the Chamber event can turn in a Rotary Makeup for the meeting.

A note to all members. Dues invoices for the January to June term have been e-mailed. Please take care of this as soon as possible. If you did NOT receive our invoice, please contact the secretary.

In the day's "Rotary Foundation Minute", new member Chanda Swartz noted that when she volunteered to speak, she didn't really know much about the traditions, programs, and history of Rotary. So she went to the web and did some research. Later when driving with several other realtors she mentioned polio and Rotary, none of those men knew what that was. Chanda educated them but was also struck by how her generation really didn't know about polio. And a lot of that is due to the efforts of Rotary. She said that Rotary is an authentic, dedicated organization that helps people who need help. "If you serve society, you are doing good."
