Beth Eurich
Beth Eurich, Director of the Bay County Department On Aging spoke to Rotary Tuesday. Originally called the Council on Ageing, the department started in 1968 as a small program to offer a limited number of activities and entertainment opportunities for Bay County residents over 60 years old.

Over the years the Council evolved into the Division on Ageing (1979) under the Health Department. In 2017 it became a stand-alone Department and changed its name to Bay County Department on Aging.

Today's Department has expanded the original services with a commitment to enhancing the lives of those over 60 by helping them maintain their independence, offering social opportunities and enhancing lives through quality services in a cost-effective manner.

The department offers services including home-delivered meals (Meals on Wheels), light homemaking and shopping, personal care, caregiver/kinship programs, elder abuse programs, six activity centers and the "Wonderful Times" newsletter.

"Meals on Wheels" may be the most recognized program of the Department. Meals are provided daily to homebound clients. The program has 12 routes in the county and serves from 800 to 900 meals daily. A registered dietician works as Nutrition Services Manager.

Most of the Department's programs are grant funded. Donations from recipients are requested, but services are never denied if the client can't make a donation.

Because the program is grant funded with supplements from donations, the number of clients is limited. There is always a waiting list for each of the services. Services are also limited to what can be done. Personal care has two full time licensed employees to cover 72 clients. Visits are once a week for an hour.

The Department fills a need that will only grow as the population ages. With 69 employees, only so much can be done. One thinks of government as a separate body, but in fact, the government is an extension of the citizens. The Department on Aging is an example of people caring for people.

In the "Rotary Foundation Minute" Brenda Scramlin told about two things that impacted her life. First, several years ago she saw a picture of an "iron lung". Then last year the Midland Club brought an actual "iron lung" in for a hands-on look. Brenda said if you ever have the chance, be sure you see the real thing. It's an eye-opening experience. Second, she recounted the meeting a few years ago when Rob Clark invited several polio survivors to visit the club and tell their stories. Both experiences enforced the importance of Rotary's effort to eradicate this terrible disease worldwide! For more information visit globalhandwashing.org
