Friday night my family ventured to the Tri-City Motor Speedway to check out the action. We came away with one thought in mind. Friday Nights: the place to be is at the Tri-City Motor Speedway for great family entertainment and action packed fun for everyone.

Tucked away in the farm fields of Auburn between 7th and 8th street, this 3/8 Mile dirt track is just plain fun to be at with constant action and entertainment. While I'm not a NASCAR or Indy car fan, there is something exciting and yes addictive about watching fast and loud (but not too loud) cars race about a dirt track bumping and sliding along the way. The raw courage these drivers possess to take these high powered cages covered in brightly painted sheet metal into a slippery corner with the nose of the car tucked right under the other driver's car is exhilarating. Some drivers like racing high on the track teetering on sliding off the track (and some do) while others take the low road to try and get an advantage Add 20 of these cars for the featured races and you have nonstop excitement.

Drivers watch out for each other as they have to decide is their opponent in a controlled skid or has the back end broke loose.

The races start with qualifiers, some to establish starting positions for the night ending feature races and others to narrow down the field a bit for those same races. These are shorter length races ranging from 5 to 10 laps with the final races called feature races of each car classification being 20 laps. And those 20 laps go fast. Seemed that they just get started and you get so involved in the various pockets of action that suddenly they are on the last couple laps battling it out for the checked flag.

Drivers push their cars to the limit in "hot laps" so they can make adjustments before the real racing begins.

Steve Puvalowski and company have put together a first class operation as evidenced by the near capacity crowds at the track. They provide clean comfortable stands with sections to allow folding chairs, wheelchairs and even scooters so all fans can enjoy the action right up to the track. While you can bring your own cooler of drinks and food, very reasonable prices and good too allow you to skip that as we did and enjoy a brat, dog, pulled pork or any number of other concession foods and cold drinks. The track, considered one of the finest in the circuit and state, is geared and enjoyed by families of all ages. And when I say all ages, there were infants of yes, under 6 months at this event. Knowledgeable parents had their infants' ears covered with ear muffs for protection.

Boys and girls, moms and dads all show up and enjoy the races.

On this night, the Fourth of July was celebrated with a fireworks show put on in the infield between the final races. Each week is a new featured event. There is even a Mental Health Awareness Night scheduled for July 31 with all profits benefiting Mental Health Awareness and Survivors of Suicide Support Group.

But the true fun was watching the nonstop racing. As one race ends, the next takes the track immediately so the action never stops. After about four heats, brief track maintenance takes place with the watering of the track, just long enough for food or bathroom breaks. But hurry, you won't want to miss any of the action.
