C.J. Miller
New Rotarian CJ Miller spoke to Rotary to introduce himself and tell a little about his E-Publication throughthese4eyes.com.

A self-professed man of many words, except when talking about himself, CJ related some of his upbringing and early interest and jobs. Growing up in Bridgeport, he spent a lot of time in Bay City. Today he and his wife, Leslie, now live just north of Kawkawlin. The couple has two sons, Brandon (26) and Kyle (20).

Describing himself as a "complete nerd", CJ said he's always been a fan of comics, Superman in particular, and is an avid collector. "If you visited my office you'd see it's covered with comics, posters, and collectibles."

CJ had several jobs as he became established locally. He always loved walking, thinking, and photographing the downtown area and other interesting Bay City locations. Becoming a member of the Facebook group Memories of Bay City, he started posting his pictures there.

The popularity of those Facebook posts led CJ to start his own Facebook page. Needing more control than Facebook provides, it wasn't long before he started an actual site of his own called ThroughThese4Eyes.com.

CJ's new web venture encouraged him to evolve the site into an actual job. ThroughThese4Eyes.com has become an advertising supported e-publication that is CJ's full time occupation.

Photo spreads and written articles have expanded to include video pieces. The mission of the publication is to tell the "good news" about Bay City and its surroundings. It's certainly worth a read.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

In the "Rotary Foundation Minute" President Harvey noted that the only disease that has been eradicated is smallpox, a contagious, disfiguring, and often deadly affliction. That success is instructive because it shows that a dread disease can be conquered. Polio is on it's way to eradication. Unfortunately, a recent mutation has allowed polio to threaten a comeback. Now, more than ever, Rotary's worldwide campaign to eradicate Polio needs everyone's support.

Harvey also reported on the Dictionary and Thesaurus project. The club had voted to drop that program, but the Morning Rotary put in a grant request naming our club as a partner. In light of that, Harvey also wrote a district grant request, which was approved. The club will, therefore, distribute the books to area third graders again this year. The success of the grant is a testimony to RI's Annual Fund Share program. Contributions to that program are held and used by RI for two years, after which half of the funds come back to the district for local use. Our grant came from that program.

---- DATES TO REMEMBER ----

November has been designated as Bay City Rotary's "Month of sharing". Programs for the month will emphasize the many things we have to be thankful for and will encourage ways we can share with our family, friends, and community.

Rotary returns to the Doubletree for the October 30, 2018 meeting.

Upcoming Programs

(See the official schedule at RotaryBayCity.org )

October 30, 2018: Festival of the Trees. Laura Horwath will speak about the Junior League of the Great Lakes Bay Region's largest fundraiser, the Festival of the Trees. The annual event presents over 100 designers contribute fabulously decorated trees and wreaths, which are raffled off. Local vendors are on hand to sell their specialties. The money raised throughout the weekend supports the Junior League of the Great Lakes Bay Region's mission of promoting voluntarism, training its members, and improving the community.
