Misty Janks Presents YWCA Update To Rotary

Misty Janks, YWCA Executive Director, spoke to Rotary on the occasion of the 125th birthday of the YWCA. She updated the club on some of the current programs and the reach of the organization locally.

The "Women's Resource Center" now features a "YWCA Working Wardrobe". Low-income women who are part of the "Getting Ahead" program and are seeking employment, starting a new job, or going to school, can visit the closet to pick up appropriate attire. The YWCA is accepting a donation of business appropriate clothing for this program.

Employment Department Circles are groups of about 15 women who meet monthly for personal and professional development. This program kicks off on December 14. It compliments a program in November that was attended by over 200 people.

With a staff of only four people, the YWCA is always looking for volunteers. There are a variety of programs where assistance is always welcome. Jobs range from arranging clothing in the Working Wardrobe, to the Racial Justice and Advocacy committee.

In celebration of the 125th year of the YWCA, supporters are invited to join the "Circle of Giving Women" with a donation of $125. This group finances programs which focus on women's empowerment and economic advancement. The program makes sure that local women receive information, guidance, and essential tools that need to support their families and reach their economic and education goals.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

At the District Foundation Gala, held two weeks ago, Brenda Scramlin accepted a certificate on behalf of the club. Presented by Chuck Cusick, the certificate said "Bay City Rotary is presented a certificate of appreciation for its financial support of the End Polio Now - Make History Today campaign. Brenda went on to say that our Paul Harris Fellow honoree, Avram Golden, "immediately snatched the certificate from my hands, and you will see why". A few days later Avram returned it professionally framed. With the club's permission, Brenda will display this certificate in her office. A copy will be kept in the club archives.

The annual Christmas Program will be on December 20th. The Bay City Morning Rotary, the Northern Bay and Arenac Rotary, and the Optimists have been invited. Entertainment will be by the Garber Varsity Choir. Thanks to Lee Newton for organizing this event.

I was also noted that First Presbyterian offers a Wednesday Noon Advent Musical Series every year in the weeks before Christmas. Lee and Molly Newton will be performing on the third Wednesday of the series this year, 12:15 noon, December 14.

The box to collect books for the Philippines will be in the back of the room until March when the books are shipped.
