Laura Horwath
Presenting itself as "A community focused fashion show for the people of the Great Lakes Region", StyleCOMM is returning to Bay City on October 16, 2016. Laura Horwath of Ferne Boutique, talked to Rotary about the event and its goals.

Founded by Laura and Tash Cole of Tasha Cole Photography, StyleCOMM builds on the success of a fashion show the women held in April. That show was a combination of talents from six, female owned, local businesses. The women wanted to do something different in the region, "something we didn't already have".

The first fashion show was held at Old City Hall and sold out their entire 100 tickets in 24 hours. The only problem with the first show was that they had more demand than room. "We physically could not add any more people unless we wanted the Fire Marshall to come get us in trouble."

The October event has moved to the DoubleTree and expects to attract 300 to 400 women, ages 25-50. "We donated a portion of the proceeds from the first show to the YWCA and we will do that again. This time, we will also donate to Children's Health in Midland", said Laura.

StyleCOMM focuses on support for small, local businesses. Ten local businesses will be at the October event running "pop-up shops" where attendees can shop and meet these businesses while they are at the fashion show.

Laura invited the audience to contact her at the Ferne Boutique for more information. Sponsorships are solicited from businesses wanting a representation at the event.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

Tara Welch updated the club on the "Running Dead" fundraiser scheduled for October 8. A map of the area shows the planned race route is "through the woods and over the bridge" including the wooded Sugar Trails south of the Salzburg bridge, north to the tip of the Middle Grounds, and back again. That should be over 3,000 meters. Brenda Scramlin is the volunteer coordinator for the event.

Deb Lutz is looking for members to sign up for Club Service. These volunteers collect lunch money and sell 50/50 tickets at the door for regular meetings.

Bob Chadwick, President-elect, ask for members who would like to serve on the board, or as officers, or committee members to let him know. Bob and the executive committee are trying to build and maintain a list of interested members to make the job of filling positions easier in the future.

Andrea Hales announced that our new exchange student, from South Korea, arrived at the airport that afternoon. Barb Behmlander and her husband are the host family and were scheduled to meet the student at the gate.

The Doubletree provided a large basket of their famous, individually wrapped, Chocolate Chip Cookies as a token of apology for the unscheduled move to the restaurant at last week's meeting. Thanks to the Doubletree for that gesture.

When Eric Jylha, the day's Sargent at Arms, called for Happy and Hard Luck bucks, Bob Chadwick spoke up to say he was happy that his favorite season had arrived: "football trash talking season". We wonder if he has not been paying attention to the most vocal Presidential candidate for the past few months.

If you have not paid your July to December dues, please get that in. If you need another invoice, ask Steve Kent.
