Mark Pankner - Junior Achievement
Mark Pankner President of Junior Achievement Saginaw, spoke to Rotary about the program and its success. The world's largest and fastest growing non-profit economic education organization, JA got it's start in Saginaw in 1964. Bay County was added in 1982. In 1991 eleven counties were added and the name was changed to Junior Achievement of Northeast Michigan.

The mission statement is "Junior Achievement will ensure that every child in Northeast Michigan has a fundamental understanding of the free enterprise system." Programs are taught by more than 520 volunteers recruited from the local business community. Over 12,000 students participated in one or more programs.

JA started as a high school program teaching students how to organize a company, sell stock, select a product, manufacture a product, then liquidate the company. By 1977 JA had become an in-school program that became a curriculum program for juniors and seniors. 1981 saw the addition of the in-school elementary school curriculum, which accounts for over 70% of JA's programs.

Today's program focuses on three pillars: Financial Literacy, Entrepreneurship, and Work Readiness. With schools teaching far fewer of these life skills, the role of JA becomes more and more important.

For more information about JA, contact Mark Pankner.
