Bay City Democrat Jeff Mayes has announced a H.I.R.E. Plan to invest in renewable energy, put Michigan citizens back to work, provide incentives for economic growth. A State Senate candidate, Mayes today called on his opponent Mike Green to pledge to support Hire Michigan First, a legislative plan Mayes helped pass in the House of Representatives that has been blocked in the state Senate for more than a year.

Mayes is running for State Senate District 31, which includes Arenac, Bay, Huron, Sanilac and Tuscola Counties, and would succeed Senator Barcia who is not able to run again due to term limits.

"Getting our workers back on the job and encouraging new businesses to settle in our state isn't a Democrat or Republican issue and we need real leaders to stand up and support real measures that will help turn our economy around, regardless of their party affiliation," said Jeff Mayes. "I'm challenging Mike Green to support Hire Michigan First to stop giving tax breaks and state contracts to companies that send our jobs to other countries and help get the unemployed citizens of our state back on the job. It's essential we pave the way for a strong economic future, and my plan will do just that."

The H.I.R.E. Plan stands for:

· Hire Michigan First: Make sure state tax incentives go to companies that are creating Michigan jobs, and eliminate state contracts and end tax breaks for businesses that outsource jobs or hire illegal workers.

· Incentives: Provide incentives to help companies like General Motors expand in Michigan and support new businesses like Hemlock Semiconductor.

· Renewable Energy: Invest in and promote alternative energy like solar power, battery and electric vehicle manufacturing, and the use of renewable fuels like ethanol and biodiesel. These new efforts build on our agricultural and manufacturing experience to create the jobs of the future for Michigan workers at companies like Dow Chemical and Hemlock Semiconductor.

· Employment: Reduce fees and eliminate burdensome regulations in order to help companies big and small bring new jobs to Michigan.

"Jeff Mayes has consistently worked to support our local small businesses and has helped to create hundreds of jobs in our community," said Pat Schnell, owner of Rosie's Pies and Catering in Bay City. "His dedication to putting Michigan workers back on the job is obvious and I'm confident he'll continue working in the state Senate to help new businesses grow in our community."

"Jeff Mayes has already been pushing for many pieces of this proposal to help protect and create Michigan jobs," said Bay County Executive Tom Hickner, adding:

"He voted for and continues to call for action on the Hire Michigan First plan, which gives businesses tax incentives to hire Michigan residents and would take away state tax credits and end state contracts for companies that outsource jobs or hire illegal workers.

"Mayes has also co-sponsored legislation to prevent the hiring of illegal workers that take good Michigan jobs by taking away the business licenses of companies who hire illegal workers.

"Mayes also led the effort to create a bipartisan energy package and strategy to grow jobs and require the use of renewable energy such as wind and solar. He has written laws to provide incentives that have produced more than 1,600 jobs at companies like Dow Chemical and Hemlock Semiconductor that support solar, battery and electric vehicle manufacturing.

"Jeff Mayes has been active in promoting growth and jobs in energy and technology related fields, but he also understands that farms and agri-businesses are an essential part of Michigan's 21st century economy and has passed laws to expand the use of renewable fuels like ethanol and biodiesel," continued Mr. Hickner. "He consistently stands up for local farmers and opposes unnecessary regulations that would hurt agriculture."
