The Bay Music Foundation continued a tradition that covers over 50 years in the local area. Twenty three junior and senior high school students competed in the 2012 Bay Music Foundation scholarship competition held on Saturday February 11. Winners gathered Sunday the 12th to present a free "Winners Showcase" recital at St. Boniface Church.

Judges Ponder Scores
Judges are selected from a pool of professional musicians, music teachers and college professors. A first and second place scholarship is given in each division and category. Judges may also award honorable mentions.

The event, held at Bay City's St. Boniface Church, has been a high point for young musicians for over 50 years. Students compete in Piano, Instrumental, Voice and Musical Theater categories.

Competition is open to all Intermediate and High School students from the Bay County area. Students compete in three divisions. Students in grades 6 to 8 are classified at the intermediate level. Grade 9 to 12 students compete in the Senior division. Winners in the Senior division can return the next year to compete at an "Advanced" level.

At each competition, Judges are given the option to award one of two special awards to outstanding musicians and performers. The Tony Rongo Honor Award is presented for instrumental excellence, and the Robert Story Honor Award for vocalists. This year the Robert Story Award went to vocalist Alejandro (Hondo) Cervantes. Hondo has been competing at Bay Music since he was first eligible and had demonstrated advancement and still each year.

Winners receive cash scholarship awards, which can be used for summer study at camps such as Herter Music's camp to CMU, Blue Lakes, and Interlochen. Optionally the awards may be used to buy instruments, music, and other music related items.

The Saturday competition is held at St. Boniface Church. The next day winners and their families and friends came back to the church for an afternoon Winner Showcase Recital followed by a reception. The public is invited to this free concert ti enjoy great music and performances by some of the area's most talented young people.

In the Spring the Foundation presents a "Celebration Of The Arts" program at the State Theater. Winners from the past are invited to provide musical performances giving the audience and supporters the chance to see how they have advanced.

At the Celebration, the Foundation presents the "Peggy Rowley Award" to a person who has made "outstanding contributions to the arts and music in the Bay County". Last year the award was presented to Eileen Harrigan.

The Bay Music Foundation is a local nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting music study. Besides the annual competition, the foundation holds workshops and master classes. All scholarship funds come from contributions and the all volunteer organization grants the majority of these funds to scholarships.
