For over 50 years the
Bay Music Foundation has been holding an
annual scholarship competition for
February 11, 2012. The competition is open to music students in the Bay Area. Winners of the prestigious competition may use their awards for lessons, camps, instruments, sheet music, and related expenses. Winnings may also be deferred and used for college expenses.
Most students learn of the competition from private music teachers or their band directors. They can compete at a number of levels in the categories of piano, instrumental, voice, and musical theater. Top award winners may return to compete in the advanced category.
Winners of the competition represent some of the best musicians in the area. Many have gone on to music schools and to be professional musicians. After 50 plus years, it's interesting to find how many adults were past competitors and winners.
The day after the competition the winners return to the venue to present a free
Winners Showcase performance. Family and friends as well as the public attend this free event.
In the Spring the Foundation presents it's annual
Celebration of the arts at the State Theater. Current and past winners return to perform at this event. The Foundation also presents it's annual "
Peggy Rowley Award" to an outstanding music educator or musician from the area.
The competition and Winner's Showcase will be held at Bay City's St. Boniface Church. The Foundation also offers competition preparation and master classes for competitors.
Applications for this years competition are available from band directors, Herter Music Center, music teachers, and from the Foundation's web site
