Junior League Festival of the Trees Topic of Rotary Program

October 30, 2018
By: Stephen Kent

Laura Horwath
Laura Horwath, of Ferne Boutique, spoke to the club about the Junior League's upcoming 30th Anniversary Festival of Trees. The event, held Friday, November 9 through Sunday, November 11 at Apple Mountain, raises money to fund the League's mission of promoting voluntarism, training its members, and improving the community.

The Junior League of the Great Lakes Bay Region was originally founded in Saginaw in 1929. At that time young women didn't have the opportunities for service that are so widespread today. Many were already contributing funds to support community organizations, but they wanted a way to volunteer.

The Junior League supports community organizations, many of which were created with help from the League. With a mission to develop the potential of women, the League provides training and opportunities to all women who demonstrate that spirit of voluntarism.

The annual Festival of Trees will feature decorated trees and wreaths which have been created for the event and donated by over 100 designers. These items will be raffled off to the attendees. Trees will be delivered to the winners and completely set up by the designer, at no extra charge.

General Admission to the event is $5 per person. Raffle tickets are $1 each or 6 for $5. Veterans are admitted free with the presentation of a Military ID.

The event runs for three days:
  • Friday, Nov. 9, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m., (Premiere Night 6 p.m. - 10 p.m.)
  • Saturday., Nov. 10, 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.
  • Sunday Nov. 11, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m., (Raffle starts at 4 p.m.)

    CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

Happy Birthday Rotarians. The club celebrated the Birthdays of eight members born in October. This is a good opportunity and reminder to make a contribution to the Rotary Foundation. The Club suggests 50ยข per year to commemorate a member's birthday.

President Harvey read a letter from the Bay County Library System thanking the club for the recent donation in the name of Past President Bob Chadwick. The funds were used to purchase a collection of books for the Library's Business and Marketing section.

Rotarian Andreas Teich inducted returning member Lynn Weaver. Having returned to the club after a brief absence, Lynn was welcomed back without the usual induction rite. She thanked the club and said she was happy to be back. Lynn is the new director of the McLaren Bay Medical Foundation.

In the day's "Rotary Foundation Minute", Carrie Strohkirch listed some of the recent grants made by the foundation including $700 million was given in 2010 to 2017. Many people think that this money is spent on polio vaccines. In fact, the vaccines are covered by other organizations. The Rotary funds cover operational support, technology, workers and related costs. Rotarians were reminded that a Polio collection jar is at the front of the room continuing the program started a few years ago and called "the change in your pocket can make a difference".

Tim Holsworth reprised his role as Sargent at Arms as he stood in for the excused Cindy Chadwick, who had planned to stand in for the excused Eric Jylha. As usual, there were many "Happy Bucks" and a few "Hard Luck Bucks" as Rotarians told the club of recent events in their lives.
