By: O. J. Cunningham

On Sunday, September 16, 2018, at 4:00 PM, Tyler Kivel and Nicholas Schmelter will present a piano/organ "All Flash No Trash" concert in the sanctuary to conclude First Congregational Church's Rally Sunday events.

Tyler Kivel and Nicholas Schmelter commenced a Midwest tour of piano-organ duo recitals with recitals in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, London, Ontario, Canada, Alpena, Bay City, Flint, and Gaylord, and a stop here in Saginaw, Michigan.

The ensemble has realized creative new orchestrations of selections by Anderson, Debussy, Grainger, Lutoslawski, Poulenc, Saint-Saƫns, and Shostakovich. Among its goals, the duo aims to bring music to diverse demographics and rural communities and to offer educational opportunities to collaborative artists and keyboard musicians.

Chicago-based pianist, Tyler Kivel is an active soloist, freelance performer, teacher, and chamber musician, including his faculty role at ChiArts and recent musical direction of Thrones! The Musical Parody. Kivel has earned several competition-based awards and made his Carnegie Hall debut in April 2018. Nicholas Schmelter is director of worship and congregational life at First Presbyterian Church in Caro, Michigan, is an adjunct faculty member at Saginaw Valley State University, and is an artist in residence at Trinity Episcopal Church in Bay City, and Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in Flint, Michigan.

He is a frequent recitalist, offering performances throughout Michigan as well as in Washington, D.C., Milwaukee, London and Toronto, Canada, and other regions. A composer himself, he has commissioned and premiered new music by Moonyeen Albrecht, Edward Moroney, Robert Powell, Philip Rice, Bernard Wayne Sanders, and others. First Congregational Church's building dates to 1867 and is located on the corner of South Jefferson Avenue and Hayden Street in downtown Saginaw. The congregation, gathered in 1857, is affiliated with the United Church of Christ and has recognized excellence and eclecticism in its worship and musical offerings since the 1800s.

As a part of its Phoenix Project that began in 2012, First Congregational Church completed restoration of the 1929 E. M. Skinner organ in 2015, as well as a lighting renovation of the sanctuary in 2012, which helps to solidify the congregation's cultural commitment to the Cathedral District, Saginaw, and the Great Lakes Bay Region.

The sanctuary is also well known for its wonderful acoustics and is a favored venue for many concerts and other events. Many areas of First Congregational Church, including Bradley House and Suttner Hall, are also available for short-term rentals.
