Students Compete in Michigan History Day

March 10, 2018
By: Stephen Kent

...
Saturday found students setting up exhibits, presenting papers, showing documentaries and showing web sites at Bay City Central High School. It was all part of the 12th annual District 5 Michigan History Day competition. The event was organized and presented by the staff of the Bay County Historical Society and Historical Museum of Bay County.

This event is the second of three preliminary competitions that qualify the best presentations to compete at the national level. Winners of Saturday's competition advance to the state competition, which will also be held at Bay City's Central High School this year. Winners at that level advance to the Nationals.

The event, held on National History Day in Michigan, is an educational competition aimed at encouraging students to explore the history and historical subjects. Participating students get to learn through hands-on research and the development of a presentation.

Working on these projects exposes students to the methods used by professional historians and researchers. They must use "primary" and "secondary" resources and understand the meaning and importance of these concepts. They apply historical and social studies as well as English and language arts.

Each year the national office in College Park, Maryland chooses a theme for the annual competition. This year the theme was "Conflict and Compromise in History". Students were required to relate their particular subject to this theme and explain the significance of the individual or event that they selected.

Competition is open to all 4-12 grade students. Teachers work with students to select a category from Exhibits, Documentaries, Performances or Web sites. The students may compete individually or as groups. Students may also elect to submit research papers on an individual basis.

Starting in October each year staff from the Historical Museum of Bay County provides support to students and teachers through free classroom visits. They teach research methods and give examples of how projects can be done.

Over 155 students were registered for this year's district competition where they presented 85 projects. 70 students representing 38 projects will advance to the State competition held in April (also at Bay City Central High this year). At State, the top two projects from each category will qualify for the National competition to be held in College Park Maryland this coming June.
