A choral tradition dating to medieval times in England will be revived Sunday at Trinity Episcopal Church.
The Senior Choir of Trinity Episcopal Church will sing Choral Evensong for Eastertide April 28 at 4 p.m.
Evensong is a worship service of the Anglican Communion that includes hymns, canticles, scripture readings, prayers, organ music and an anthem. Much of the service is sung. It is a uniquely an Episcopalian-Anglican tradition that has been celebrated all over the world since the first Book of Common Prayer was published in 1549 in the reign of Edward VI.
The Reverend Ann Grady is the Priest in Charge and Robert Sabourin is the organist - choir director at Trinity.
Choral repertoire for Evensong includes, "Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in B-flat" by C. V. Stanford and "Laudate Dominum" by W. A. Mozart. Nicholas Schmelter, director of music at First Congregational Church in Saginaw, will be the organist for the service.
Organ music will include "Saraband (For the Morning of Easter)", by Herbert Howells and "Prelude on Deus Turoum" by Michigan born composer Leo Sowerby. Soprano Rayechel Neiman will be featured in the Mozart "Laudate Dominum" which is a setting of Psalm 117 from "Vesperae solemnes de confessore." Monica Borrello will be the worship leader. Cantors include Troy Bergman and Stephanie Bergman. The acolyte is Adam Culler.
Two Easter anthems by Bay City composer H. R. Evans will be sung as a prelude to the service. "Glory to His Name" and "Easter Morning" were written for the choir of First Presbyterian Church in Bay City where Evans served as organist and choir director from 1923 until his death in 1962.
"Easter Morning" was dedicated to Mr. and Mrs. Seth Babcock. The choir at First Presbyterian was known throughout the state during Mr. Evans' tenure at First Presbyterian. Many of the anthems written by Evans featured his eight soloists who included Alice Bukius, Anne Hatchel, Lyle Clift, Earl Koch, Clarence Pettit, Robert MacPhail, and Earl Perry. "Rusty" was also a music teacher at Central High School where he founded "Band Bounce", the school's annual music variety show.
Friends of Music will host reception in the Guild Room following the service. Barrier free access is on the west side of the building from the church parking lot. For more information please call Trinity Episcopal Church at 989-892-5813.
