Settle back in your seats Bay City, on Saturday, September 27, 2008 you will be awed by the magnificent blend of voices of the Makem-Spain Brothers.
The Friends of Celtic Culture is excited to bring to you the
Makem and Spain Brothers, the sons of Tommy Makem have been joined by the Spain brothers for their first concert in Bay City at the State Theatre,
Washington Ave. at 7:30 p.m.
Tommy Makem, the Bard of Armagh and THE greatest influence on Irish folk music in Ireland and America, has passed on, but not before he passed on his talents to his three sons, Shane, Conor, and Rory. They actually represent the third generation of their legendary family of Irish born singers.
Their grandmother Sarah Makem was a source singer and was visited by folk music collectors from all over the world such as Pete Seeger, Diane Hamilton, and Jean Ritchie for her great store of old Irish songs.
In 2003 the Spain brothers, Mickey and Liam, also influenced by their folk singing father, joined forces with the Makems to form a dynamic quintet as strong as any Irish group performing today.
With ballads, folk tunes, and seafaring songs extolling the successes and tragedies of the great Irish diaspora, the Makem and Spain Brothers' sound comes from powerfully backed, precise three-part harmonies, varied instrumentation, and a strong appreciation for the history and progression of folk music. Settle back in your seats, Bay City, you will be awed by the magnificent blend of voices of the Makem-Spain Brothers.
