Tri-County Economic Club Monthly Meeting

Bioagriculture opportunities in the Saginaw Valley will be put into focus Monday, Feb. 25 at the Tri-County Economics Club meeting.

Speaker will be Dr. Christopher Schilling, a faculty member at Saginaw Valley State University who has been an engineer and scientist with experience with the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

Dr. Schilling holds the Charles H. Strosacker chair of engineering. He joined SVSU in August 2001. Before that he held a joint appointment as an associate professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Iowa State University and a research associate of the U.S. Department of Energy Ames Laboratory at Iowa State University.

Previously he worked as a research engineer at the U.S. Department of Energy Battelle Pacific Northwest Laboratory on projects involving aluminum extractive metallurgy and the development of organic polymer additives to process advanced ceramics.

He also was an engineer at the N.A.S.A. Jet Propulsion Laboratory researching microgravity solidification of glass micro-balloons for laser-fusion-energy targets.

He received his B.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering from California State Polytechnic University and MSc. and Ph.D. degrees in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of California at Los Angeles and the University of Washington, respectively.

He currently teaches courses in materials science and mechanical engineering at SVSU and is working on a variety of research projects, some involving bioagriculture.

Among his projects and presentations are: with Jody Pollok (Michigan Corn Marketing Program) and George Puia (SVSU), "Corn-based Solid Fuel for Industrial and Residential Heating." Corn Utilization and Technology Conference, Dallas, Texas, April 2006.

Poster session with David L. Karpovich (SVSU), "Biofuels and Biodegradable Plastics from Corn." Corn Utilization and Technology Conference, Dallas, Texas, 6 June 2007.

Grants and funded research includes: "Ethanol-Fueled Vehicle Demonstration Project," Michigan Corn Growers Association, Bishop Energy Services LLC, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Saginaw Valley State University student chapter. $3,100. Summer 2006.

Principal investigator, with David Karpovich and Edward Meisel III,(both SVSU). "Biodegradable Structural Materials from Recycled Biomass." Michigan Corn Growers Association, the United States Department of Agriculture and the Michigan Department of Agriculture. $70,000. 1 January 2005 to 1 August 2006.

"Pollution Prevention Internships," Michigan Department of Environmental Quality Retired Engineer Technical Assistance Program. $21,000. Summer 2006. This grant was for the summer employment of two student interns at local area businesses.

With Thomas Dudek, principal investigator, and Mark L. Seamon (both Michigan State University Extension), "Development of Educational Materials on the Adoption of Biomass Solid Fuel Heating Systems for Michigan Agricultural Operations," Michigan State University Extension. $45,000. 1 October 2006 to 30 April 2007.

With Bruce Hart (SVSU Independent Testing Laboratory), M. L. Seamon, principal investigator (Michigan State University Extension), and Robert Tuttle (Saginaw Valley State University), "Environmental Emissions Testing of Solid-Biomass-Fueled Furnaces," Michigan Corn Growers Association. $45,000. 1 April 2006 to 29 March 2007.

With David L. Karpovich, principal investigator (SVSU), "Smart Processing of Biodiesel and Fuel Ethanol on Michigan Farms," Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth. $46,171. 1 February 2006 to 31 January 2007.

With David L. Karpovich, principal investigator (SVSU),"Heating Buildings with Glycerin Residues from Biodiesel Processing," Michigan Soybean Promotion Committee. $42,769.49. 1 April 1 2006 to 29 March 2007.

With Frances McNiel, principal investigator (U.S. Department of Agriculture and Flint Urban Youth Community Outreach Program), David L. Swenson (SVSU), and Terri L. Novak (Michigan Department of Environmental Quality), "Development of a Biomass-Fueled Heating System for an Inner-City Community Greenhouse," Saginaw Bay Watershed Initiative Network. $35,000. 1 April 2006 to 29 March 2007.###
