The Bay Music Foundation held it's annual scholarship competition at St. Boniface Church on Saturday February 9th. Twenty four of the areas best young musicians gathered to compete for scholarships and awards.
The Bay Music competition is the high point of the year for many of these students. There are other competitive opportunities, such as the school system's Solo and Ensemble event, but for almost 55 years the Bay Music event has attracted the best.
Winners have historically received cash scholarship awards, which could be used for summer study at camps such as Herter Music's camp to CMU, Blue Lakes, and Interlochen. This year the rules were changed to allow awards to also be used to buy instruments, music, and other music related items.
Each year the judges have the option to reward exceptional students competing in the advanced division with the "Tony Rongo Honors Award". Named for long time Bay City musician and music teacher Tony Rongo, who passed away last year, this award is only given to the best. This year J.J. Treadway received this honor for his piano work.
On Sunday afternoon the day after the competition the winners and their families and friends came back to the church for a showcase recital. This free concert lets the public come to hear some spectacular music by the areas best musicians.
The Bay Music Foundation is a local nonprofit dedicated to promoting music study. Besides the annual competition, the foundation holds workshops and master classes. All scholarship funds come from contributions and the all volunteer organization grants the majority of these funds to scholarships.
