The John Glenn Bobcats defeated their cross town rival, the Garber Dukes 17-7. The unbeatable defense that Bobcat fans see so often was vital in their Friday night victory.

Kicking off the game of the season, the Bobcats held Garber, neglecting to allow even one first down. However, while the ball was in Glenn's possession Garber snatched the ball on a fumble recovery putting the Bobcats back on defense.

Almost as soon as the ball was out of Glenn's hands, sophomore Jordan Schuman was able to make an astounding interception. With the Bobcats quickly returning to offense, they thundered their way up the field. Before the end of the first quarter, quarterback Richard Watson completed an 8 yard touchdown pass to junior running back Matt Balen, who ran it into the end zone, starting off the game on the right foot.

Ty Richards, John Glenn's record breaking soccer star, put up the extra point and the score going in to the second quarter was 7-0. In the second quarter Garber continued to struggle against JG's defense. No longer able to keep the ball in their possession, the Dukes found themselves again defending their end zone, attempting to keep John Glenn from getting another touchdown. However, the Bobcats rose to the challenge and scored again with 6:46 on the clock. Chris Schuman was claimed JG's second touchdown and again, Richards scored the extra point.

The score now stood at 14-0. Before the end of the half, the Bobcats managed to claw their way inside the Dukes 5 yard line with 37 seconds left to play. Richards scored a 3 point field goal for Glenn in the final seconds of the quarter. Going into halftime the score was 17-0.

In the final stretch of the game, Garber began to fight back. Though no points were scored by either team in the 3rd quarter, Garber was able to complete a touchdown of their own made by Josh Pierson with 6:03 remaining in the game.

The extra point was good and Garber now trailed 17-7. Glenn strained to gain ground and soon Garber regained possession. As the Dukes crept closer to the end zone, Balen sealed the game with a 25 yard interception near the end of the 4th quarter.

As the clock whittled down to the last few seconds a sense of victory came over both the fans and the players. Not only did the Bobcats defeat their arch rival, they made it into the playoffs of the tenth consecutive year.

Despite a few crucial losses, Glenn was more than able to come back and win the principal game of their season. Says Balen, "The season had its ups and downs - but last night we played as a team and it showed because we won. It's a great feeling to beat a team like Garber."

The Bobcats will begin their playoff run next Friday against either Sault St. Marie, Mount Pleasant, or Gaylord.
